About this workshop

Why does your gaze linger on one painting, while you quickly move on from another? The answer often lies in composition. Sketching and experimenting with different compositions is the starting point of your painting – and therefore an essential part of the painting process. Composition isn't just about what you paint, but above all about how you guide the viewer through your image and tell a story. By making both deliberate and intuitive choices, you can play with attention, tension, meaning and rhythm. In this workshop you'll explore all of this under the guidance of visual artist and teacher Floor de Bruin. How do you begin painting a still life on your canvas? What techniques can you use to create a composition that captures your attention and holds it for a while? These questions are central to the workshop, in which you'll mainly be experimenting. The slow drying time of oil paint is ideal for developing and reworking a composition, as you can easily remove or add elements. The workshop is suitable for everyone, even if you have no prior experience with oil painting. Language: general introduction in Dutch, individual guidance in Dutch or English
